The Boston Public Library’s Print Department is home to more than 350 vintage travel posters, most dating from the 1920s-1940s, the «Golden Age of Travel.»
Railways opened up America and Europe, luxe ocean liners introduced elegance into
overseas voyages, and drivers took to the road in record numbers in their new automobiles. By the mid-1940s, new airlines crisscrossed the globe, winging adventure-seekers to far-flung destinations.
Travel agents and ticket offices during this period were festooned with vivid, eye-catching posters, all designed to capture the beauty, excitement and adventure of travel and to promote a world of enticing destinations and new modes of transportation. Individual artists gained fame for their distinctive graphic styles and iconic imagery, and many posters from this era still remain important works of art long after their original advertising purposes have faded.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a large family of post-transcriptional regulators of gene
expression that are ~21-nucleotides in length and control many developmental and
cellular processes in eukaryotes. The implication of miRNAs in many disease processes
also makes them important potential targets for therapy. Research during the last
decade has identified many of the components that participate in miRNA biogenesis
and has established basic principles of miRNA function1. More recently, it has become
apparent that miRNA regulators themselves are subject to sophisticated control. Many
studies over the last few years have reported the regulation of miRNA biogenesis,
function and degradation by a range of mechanisms involving numerous proteinprotein
and protein-RNA interactions2. Such regulation has an important role in the
context-specific functions of miRNAs and an understanding of this control is needed
to gain a full picture of the roles of miRNAs in development, physiology and disease.

It serves as an advocacy tool to further support the work of statisticians across different settings, cultures, and domains.

On World Statistics Day, activities at national level will highlight the role of official statistics and the many achievements of the national statistical system. International, regional and sub-regional organizations will complement national activities with additional events.
